Revington Arthur (American, 1908-1986) - Expressionist Female Figurative, Signed (ca. 1940, Oil on Canvas). Oil on canvas titled "September Eve". Signed lower right. Title and date en verso. Housed in a Swedish wood frame with gilt metal edging, linen matting, and metal trim. Frame is in good condition with scuffs and scratches consistent with age. Canvas is in fair condition with craquelure throughout. Small paint flake in the center of canvas.

AJ Revington Arthur was born in Stamford, CT, and traveled America looking for inspiration. While in school he studied under notable artists including George Luks, Arshile Gorky, Kimon Nicholaides, and Grant Reynard. During his career his work was exhibited throughout America including at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Institute, and was published in Time and Esquire magazines. His work is in permanent collections in The Brooklyn Museum, The Delaware Museum, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. He was a member of the Silvermine Guild, and spent forty-three summers teaching at the Chautauqua Art Summer School in Chautauqua, New York, eventually becoming the director, from 1945 through 1983.
