Antique Papuan Hand Carved Hooked Primitive Figurative Sculpture
Papua New Guinea. Early 1900s. Hand carved figure on wood base. In used condition with wear consistent with age. Please refer to photos for details. These open worked hooked figures represents the guardian of the sun, containing the spirits of warfare and hunting. Large Yipwon sculptures were owned by clans, hidden in secret caves while the smaller figures were individually owned and served as hunting amulets.
