Painter Rafael Ferrer was born in 1933 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He attended Syracuse University from 1951-53. Ferrer has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1971); Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati, OH (1973); Neuberger Museum, SUNY, Purchase, NY (1985); El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY (2010); and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2015-16). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Monumental Art,Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati, OH (1969); Ten Narrative Paintings, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY (1982); El Arte A Través del Tiempo, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, Santurce, Puerto Rico (2002); and Surrealism Beyond Borders, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; and Tate Modern, London, UK (2021, 2022).
