The American pioneer Man Ray - born in 1898 under the name Emmanuel Radnitzky in the United States to 1976 in Paris - became one of the protagonists of the early avant-garde. Originally trained as a painter, after his arrival in Paris in 1921, he quickly established himself as a fashion and portrait photographer. He is world-renowned for his photographs, although he worked with many different media - including drawings, paintings, collages, photos, films and objects - and identified himself as a painter.
He played a central role in the two artistic movements - Dadaism and Surrealism along with artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, Francis Picabia and Marcel Duchamp. Man Ray is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, who with his work on the genre known as readymades - which are sculptures created from existing objects - changed the whole perception of what a work of art can be.
