Marin Majić’s paintings portray a dreamscape of enigmatic narratives, inhabited by recontextualized figures and subjects culled from a multitude of sources ranging from personal events to advertising, art historical allusions, and the internet. Hailing from both Germany and Croatia and currently based in Brooklyn, the artist has exhibited internationally, and most recently with the Nino Mier Gallery in Los Angeles.

Helpless at Best — depicts an individual peering down onto a reflective pond in the midst of a dark, forest-like setting. Majić considers it to be a memento mori, a reminder about the futility of material riches and power in the face of each human being’s inevitable demise. The painting stems from a recent body of works, which builds upon the emotional byproducts of a global pandemic, widespread socio-political upheaval, and the artist’s personal joy surrounding the birth of his first child.
