Vintage Bwami DRC Kindi Level Hat on Stand

$550.00

Vintage Bwami DRC Kindi Level Prestige Hat on Stand. Originally these hats were made with cowrie shells, but as the western influence permeated the Bwami people they started to use buttons as a form of decoration. These hats were typically worn by the Kindi, which is considered the highest level of Bwami. This prestige hat is a woven plant fiber with the addition of the buttons on the exterior. Typically the ”tail” that is at the top was made from elephant tail (the tail in this hat seems to be made from a reed or plant fibers). The buttons continue along the chin strap as well. Sits on top of a simple hat stand. This is an original hat and wear is present throughout. Overall in good condition.

Size: 12”H x 9.75”W x 6.75”D
